No, you're right, the doc is actually incorrect. This must be the out_ variables. Fixed per https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/commit/1a3f781304cd2856ec0438b2f773357907d7d8931. Is the documentation correct that input data must be checked and not the output data, i.e. `out_xmax` etc.?
