Dmitriy, It is not at all my intention to have a big-bang for GDAL 2.0. According to the ohloh estimation ( http://www.ohloh.net/p/gdal/estimated_cost ), the cumulated development to make GDAL as it is currently would represent a 265 person-years effort. I do think it is overestimated (they also include the external libraries that have been imported in the tree like libtiff, etc..); it should be closer to 30 person-years (2 full time position for the 15 years the project exist) but still... I don't think anything justifies a rewrite. My vision is more a series of incremental changes where the software remains stable and usable at each stage. That way you, we can make sure that GDAL 2.0 can be released some day...
