What happens if you do

   make STAGE1_CFLAGS="-O -g" -j4

instead of a bare make -j4 on the machine?
Sure, I'll give it a spin tonight.  I've been meaning to do a similar 
experiment for a long time, this is close enough to serve both purposes :-)
