Anyone who even contemplates getting into the this field isn't going to be someone who is easily disuaded by challenges and obstacles. Anyone new to a system looks for clear concise documentation - something which the opensource world can lack! I believe efforts to clarify and expand documentation is much more likely to entice new researchers and developers rather than a plugin system which no doubt would be poorly documented!
