I was wondering whether setting GCN_STACK_SIZE= would help; default is 32*1024.

Answer: it does not seem to help, but I noticed that from time to time,
it succeeds. I have a couple in a semi-row, but then 20 more with an
endless loop or deadlock; thus, no idea how often it will work by chance -
but it seems to be rather seldom.
