Thanks for your input, Jeff!

Unfortunately, no, I don't have any actual hardware to test on. All the data I
have is dynamic instruction counts (DIC) from user-mode QEMU runs of SPEC
benchmarks.
On 554.roms, my patch yields a reduction in DIC of 7.57% within the basic
block.
