Bug ID: 118700 Summary: Include resolution changes when using -isystem and some headers are symlinks between directories where one is a prefix of the other Product: gcc Version: 14.2.1 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: preprocessor Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org Reporter: christian.menard at gmx dot de Target Milestone: --- I discovered this problem while experimenting with Python 3.13t in a system that installed headers in "/usr/include/python3.13" and /usr/inclued/python3.13t", where most of the headers in /usr/inclued/python3.13t" are symlinks to "/usr/include/python3.13". Note that "python3.13" is a prefix of "python3.13t". Under certain circumstances (minimal example below), gcc resolves header files to an incorrect location. This bug is related to https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=61918, but I cannot reproduce 61918, and the problem described there appears to be fixed for symlinks between directories with different names. However, the issue persists if one directory is a prefix of the other. Since this appears to be a preprocessor bug, a *.i file as requested in the guidelines is not sufficient to reproduce. Steps to reproduce: $ mkdir foo foobar bar $ echo '#include "second.h"' > foo/first.h $ echo '#pragma message("included foo/second.h")' > foo/second.h $ echo '#pragma message("included foobar/second.h")' > foobar/second.h $ echo '#pragma message("included bar/second.h")' > bar/second.h $ ln -s ../foo/first.h foobar/first.h $ ln -s ../foo/first.h bar/first.h $ echo '#include "first.h"\nint main() {return 0;}' > test.c For convenience, I attached the created files as an archive. This command produces the expected output: $ gcc -I /abs/path/to/foobar test.c note: ‘#pragma message: included foobar/second.h’ But when using -system, "second.h" is resolved to "foo/second.h" $ gcc -isystem /abs/path/to/foobar test.c note: ‘#pragma message: included foo/second.h’ This happens only when there is a shared prefix between the two directories. Running the same command with "bar" on the include path correctly resolves "second.h" to "bar/second.h". $ gcc -isystem /abs/path/to/bar test.c note: ‘#pragma message: included bar/second.h’ I reproduced this with 4 different versions between 11.4.0 and 14.2.1. gcc -v output follows below: Using built-in specs.
