I think it's just a mistake in the pattern:

/* { dg-final { scan-tree-dump-times "&MEM\\\[\\\(void .\\\)&a \\\+ 8B\\\]" 3

   { dg-final { scan-tree-dump-times "&MEM <int> \\\[\\\(void .\\\)&a \\\+
8B\\\]" 3 "optimized" { target { store_merge } } } } */

No store merging takes place here so the test should use the second pattern
unconditionally.
