--- Comment #1 from Segher Boessenkool <segher at gcc dot gnu.org> --- gen_lfiwax is called by the splitters of floatsi<mode>2_lfiwax and floatsi<mode>2_lfiwax_mem, which you say can go away (nice :-) ); but it is also called by *round32<mode>2_fprs, which needs to be dealt with first (and similarly *roundu32<mode>2_fprs). Do we need most of these splitters at all?
