If anybody is interested - the following patch:

  svn diff -c190703 svn://gcc.gnu.org/svn/gcc/trunk/gcc/config/mips 

fixes the problem in gcc-4.7.3, gcc-4.7.4.

Hunk 3 in mips.md (removal of 2 comment lines) fails but one
can easily apply it manually.
