Tested x86_64-linux, mainline
This is a carefully tested patch (tested in mainline, per the normal policy,
where I also added two additional seekoff correctness testcases), which works
in limited circumstances (enough to fix the testcase, anyway) when I can
convince myself it's fully correct and consistent with our general framework.
My plan is committing it first and then possibly generalizing it, always
together with additional accompanying testcases, anyway.
