If this issue were really widespread, I would have had a ton of bug reports for that package. Fink may give you some clue as to what to astray on your Mac OS X installation. The only thing we run into on fink with the gcc4x packages is when users have extra installation of gmp, etc installed in /usr/local or MacPorts also installed.
