[Bug c/43343] -fsyntax-only rejects conforming code

-fsyntax-only still runs the preprocessor.  4.1 doesn,t work for me either.
i386 is one of the legacy builtin #defines.  You can list them with

echo | gcc-4.3 - -dD -E
