I cannot test if the patch in comment #23 fixes the regression for SPEC, but a partial test indicates that it does not reintroduce pr42220 (patch applied on top of r157293 with the patch from http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=43287#c10 and a simple update).
