In the meanwhile I have been able to build and run make check-parallel on a
x86_64-apple-darwin10.2.0, and indeed the specific problem seems fixed.
Beyond that, I'm pretty sure a judicious use of DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH and the like
should help solving similar issues in this area.
