I'm sorry I've been slow on this but work is killing me. I actually uploaded to Bugzilla a nicer approach that I think cleans up the weirdness. It also has the advantage that it works on complex numbers. I've been having trouble bootstrapping on my platform all month. I'll post the latest bootstrap problems to the wider list.
