This bug is a regression in gcc 4.4, it was AFAIK never present in gcc 4.3. Haven't tried more recent gcc versions, but I'm still seeing it with the 20090107-1 gcc-snapshot package (that is the SVN trunk). -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=36359
