this code does produce the value 19 on i686-pc-linux-gnu with gcc 2.95.3, 3.3.6, and 3.4.6, but the value 20 with gcc 4.0.4, 4.1.2, and 4.2.2. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=34154
