POINTER_PLUS was developed on a branch and went in very cleanly. I always stressed to my students that that "A good theory is a most practical thing" I just happen to to a member of Sigma Xi. from discussions surrounding the release of gcc-4.2.0 there appear to be a number of unresolved issues concerning gcc-4.2 and the release manager had serious misgivings.
