In both cases I get a clean execution of the resulting program. I wonder if you have a mingw or cygwin installation problem. Regarding your comment on optimization flags. -O3 is know to do some things not covered by the flags documented. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=29621
