I believe the latest (gcc 4.0) version uses $(GCC_FOR_TARGET), however when I tried changing the 3.4.3 file to use $(GCC_FOR_TARGET), it didn't work. I had to use $(AS_FOR_TARGET). -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=20953
