Hi List,

I wonder if someone out there can help me out with an Eamon related problem.
Having been encouraged through the positive comments on this list to try
some text adventure games (Zork, Humbug and most recently, Worlds Apart) and
having enjoyed them all, I thought I'd give Eamon a go. It looks to be a
lot of fun, but I've been unable to get it to work.

I'm running Win XP SP3 on a Dell Dimension desktop PC, with JAWS v12 and
NVDA as my two screen readers.

I have downloaded the "A Runcible Cargo" stand alone Eamon adventure, copied
the zip archive to a folder on my hard disc, and unzipped it. As has
already been said, this creates one folder, inside which is a further folder
called DX_Files and two Runciple Cargo executable files.

The two executable files are called "A Runcible Cargo.exe" and "A Runcible
Cargo (VI MODE).exe".

With all other programs closed except basic system utilities and my screen
reader, I have tried running both files. Running "A Runcible Cargo (VI
MODE).exe" appears to flash up some sort of DOS box or command prompt for a
brief moment, but nothing further happens. Executing "A Runcible Cargo.exe"
appears to start the program in a window called "untitled".

I have then pressed Y followed by X to select and confirm VI compatibility
mode, and I believe that this is taking effect.

However, here's the problem. Neither JAWS nor NVDA can read anything from
within the program's "untitled" window. This is what I get when I try:

- With JAWS: using the JAWS cursor to review the content of the "untitled"
window, JAWS just says "blank" where ever I move the JAWS cursor to. The
only place this is sometimes different is when reading the title bar, when
JAWS will sometimes (but not always) read the word "untitled" and then the
minimise, maximise and close graphics in the top right of the window. But
nothing else is spoken at all.

- With NVDA: when I press Ins numpad 7 to bring the flat review cursor to
the PC cursor, I get the message that there is no flat review object for
this window. When I try and move through the object hierarchy I am told
there is no container and I am unable to progress through any objects.

I understand of course that this game operates in a DOS box so that all
screen content needs to be read using the JAWS / flat review cursor, not the
PC cursor, and that clicking text in the window doesn't work.

I have tried cycling between full screen mode and a standard DOS Box sized
window using alt enter and the result is the same in both instances.

I have tried removing the installed files and re-creating them from the zip
archive, and then running the two executables in a different order, using
both JAWS and NVDA, but again, the result is the same.

I have also followed the same process on an Acer TravelMate 4100 laptop also
running Win XP SP3 and JAWS 12 and NVDA, but have obtained exactly the same
problem - neither screen reader can read anything from within the program
window even when VI Compatibility Mode has been enabled.

In short, nothing I do elicits any usable output from the program's dos Box
window.

I've read the 13 page user documentation available on the Eamon Deluxe
website but this provides no guidance as to what the problem might be.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong, or what I could do to
try and fix it?

Really grateful for any help. I've been playing with this for a couple of
days with absolutely no joy and I'm now out of ideas.

Cheers

Phil
