Hi Jim,

Yeah, I know you can't change the chance and community chest cards in
your Monopoly game, but its for reasons like that I've been
considering writing my own Monopoly engine. It would give me
additional flexibility to completely rewrite the boards, cards, and
even the pieces to match the real board game.
Plus, I don't know if you know this, some specialized boards offer
alternative rules or game pieces that aren't currently supported by
your Monopoly game. Probably the best example of this is the Lord of
the Rings official Monopoly board game that I own here at home. Its
got some extra pieces and rules not found in classic Monopoly.

In the LOTR version of the game the playing dice have an eye where the
one would be on a normal playing die. If you are playing with the ring
piece every time you get double ones or the eye the ring moves one
square. Once it lands on Mount Doom the game is over regardless if
anyone has reached Monopoly yet. The treasurer, IE the banker, then
adds up all the properties and assets you own and declare the winner
based on who has earned the most during that game. Obviously, this
method goes much faster and changes the strategy of the game somewhat.

Another slightly modified set of rules and play on Monopoly is the
Star Wars special edition game board. In that game your objective is
to build either the Rebel or Imperial fleet with starfighters,
starcruisers, and stardestroyers. In the alternative rule set you must
declare weather you will play Rebel or Imperial thus you can only buy
properties of that type when buying up initial properties. So if you
are Luke Skywalker and you are playing Rebel even if you land on the
Death Star you can not buy that property until that player either goes
bankrupt, or he or she sells it to you. Instead of hotels and houses
you get x-wings and starcruisers for Rebel properties, and tie
fighters and stardestroyers for Imperial properties. Its a pretty big
twist of the rules and really requires some alternative AI and so on
to play the game that way.

I'm not saying your Monopoly game is bad because it isn't. I play it
quite often. However, I think if I wrote some specialized engine or
Monopoly game I could get some of these special rules and extra game
pieces that currently aren't supported by your game. Some people might
like these extras as they certainly are different from classic
Monopoly.

Cheers!
