Hi all,
I've been pondering a slightly different approach to doing combat in
Rise of the Empire. Basically, what I have been thinking of is adding in
some real time RPG type elements which would not only make each game
completely different, but could really alter the battle system to make
battles more challenging over all. Of course, to the end user most of
this would be transparent as the computer would do the rolls, add the
hit points, etc all in real time. Though in some reguards it would have
the same sort of combat as a d20 dnd game.
For example, when you start a new game it would ask you skill level,
your afiliation such as Jedi or Sith, and then randomly roll for various
stats like your initial stamina, melee rating, force energy, etc...
Bottom line each new game you would end up with a different character
with different strengths and weeknesses.
The really cool part about this would be during combat. Say Starstone is
battling someone like Darth Vader. vader would have extremely good
stamina, melee rating, and generally good stats across the board. So a
saber battle might go like this.
You press the space bar and the computer behind the scenes rolls for
attack damage, and adds your melee rating to that. Let's assume all
total you get a 14. However, immediately after word the computer rolls
for Vader's defensive roll. It gets his defensive roll, adds his melee
rating to it, and stamina. Now, he comes up with 23 on defense. Since
his roll is superior to your attack roll you will hear the two sabers
striking each other, and your saber attack was successfully blocked
resulting in no damage.
Let's say we run an another attack and defense roll and you have an
attack roll of 26 to Vader's 18. You would here Darth Vader shoot off
sparks, and 8 points of health are taken away from his health.
I think the d20 system has a superior advantage when it comes to force
battles with Palpatine. Let's assume you are currently using force
protect and Palpatine is using Force lightning. He raises his hand and
sends a green bolt of lightning your way. You have your protection up,
and depending on the attack and defense rolls plus your own Force and
stamina stats will determine how much of the lightning you successfully
deflected. Then, you might switch to Force stun in attempt to stun
Palpatine, and he will switch to Force protect and the rolls will
determine weather or not your stun attack was successful and for how long.
What do all of you think?
