Hi Nicol, Poltergeists are widely regarded to be fictional creatures, and can be anything the author developer wants them to be. For example in the Poltergeist movies 1-4 the poltergeists were evil demonic creatures trying to kill Carol Anne. In the Ghost Busters movies they were also dark and evil ghosts. In the Harry Potter books they are not really evil or harmful just mischievous. In some books and movies they are harmless.
