Actually, there is a way to see if a file is playing.  Here is the sequence. 
I feel dumb because I asked about it on list and it's right there in my 
enemy attack game.
Do While dsStartup.GetStatus = DSCBSTATUS_CAPTURING
   DoEvents
  Loop
