Hi Darren.
what exactly do you mean "join the military?" in s5 you don't really do
that. You get missions alocatied by your faction, though if your a trader
you will be mostly doing the supply type missions. The governer can sell you
an amnesty if your a criminal, and getting influence with him will either
bring him to your side if your playing a pirate and trying to create an
empire, or get other bennifits later in the game, but there is no joining
military.
the only smugglers game I believe where that was possible was s3, and even
in s3 it wasn't a good idea to switch factions anyway sinse you couldn't
advance in your new faction. Sinse then it's been a one faction series,
until the option of creating your own pirate empire was introduced in
original s5 anyway, and even that is pretty specialized.
