hi scot.
an interesting paper.
Ofcause if we are being noticed by the big companies especially
microsoft which is one of those that are huge there is hope.
However there is a difference from putting out yet another studdy, to
actually doing anything about it.
What for example is basic accessability?
basic could be defined that you can open, read the title, close the
program, and quit it.
it could also mean things like stereo sound for objects, maybe simple
target beeps, etc.
it doesn't mean though that menus are accessable or anything.
and while there is the ability even in graphical lanugages like unity
xna, etc to use speech on a wider scale bar the sports games basic
accessability is narator, ms magnifier, ms accessability frontends
in options on windows, text on screen, etc etc.
its not really accessability, its just crap.
I am not convinced that with the way ms did all its narators and its
so called accessability that it will even remotely help us.
unless we use windows xp for ever with pirated cracked keys and ms
office xp with the same keys.
all the new ribbons and then there is win9, just about everyone I
talk to in the industry down to my screen reader dealer says that
basically it will work but in reality win8 is crap and unstable and
stupid right now and to stay with 7 or even better xp.
with xp dieing 7 is probably the best we will get.
so when ms talk about accessability I am not sure if I should beleve
them or not.
not to mention we just get this now on a list for the little blind
people hidden away on some place on the net.
the fact is if this was really big news it would have appeared
offline on the news or in stores.
I don't mean to be critical but with the track record on ms
accessability and how they have mangled office and windows to make it
harder for us to use meaning we have to fiddle round is just not
sitting with me at all.
worse that paper is at least 6 months old.
6 months is enough time for at least some small games to have come out.
no one cares about the poor blind.
this paper means nothing, or maybe its too soon.
My issue is that everyone is happy to concider things like this a
good idea, serveys, papers, the lot.
Vary few actually do anything.
with the acception of a few small developers on the audiogames forum.
no companies online or offline stores have even managed to get close.
maybe if one of the big gaming companies like nentendo or soni did
simular papers I'd actually hope this would work but no such luck.

Just been sent this paper, thought it might be useful for anyone who's
in touch with developers. Plus, it's an interesting read.
