Hello Niall, The skill of gating is not required to complete the Shadow Gate adventure. Gating will help you complete it easier, but is not necessary to complete it if you don't have it. You will be given a stone by the munks to close the gate, and basicly if you figure out how it works you can close and seal the gate. The hardest part about that adventure is the swarms of monsters that come out of the gate before you can close it. I'd take a good sword in there with some good mr as well as stamina points and you can complete the mission with no problem.
