Hmmm.
I would first suggest you going to control panel by start then run
then type control.
Now system then hardware then device manager button.
Look through your device list and push enter on devices to get their
properties.
Look in the general tab.
You are looking for conflict device list.
If all your devices are with no conflict then check if you have an
otherdevices catogry if you do then there are devices you need to
load drivers for.
You can also go add new hardware and detect things.
Somewhere in the menus is something called show or hide hiden devices.
There are loads of things here after that in dev manager, but chances
are its a device you no longer use, just remember to hide hiden devices again.
Right.
If thats not device manager we can assume it aint hardware.
check your directx version and upgrade if necessary.
Update device drivers if necessary.
Ok ok its all ok but still not working.
Try a run through with dxdiag.
start run dxdiag.
You want to test direct sound, direct imput and direct play subsystems.
Ok ok still ok.
It may be a program you have loaded, eg a viruschecker or security program.
If said program aint giving you any trouble check its error logs
found mostlikely in its own directory in program files or in the
application data directory of either the all users or your user account folder.
In any case if there are errors you can search via the manufacturers
support site or google.com.
Well no joy here.
Do a chkdsk on the computer if there is an error on a drive do chkdsk
/f, then restart the system and let chkdsk run.
Try a disk defrag if the disk needs it that is, defrag will tell you.
Ok its all ok nothing there.

You have reached the end of basic user tech support.
Almost the end.
You may at your own risk run something like reg scrub xp or something
like that.
You may want to run something like startup manager from
www.jfwlite.com to check for stuff you don't want to start up on your system.
you may wish to spyware and antivirus your computer with the
appropriate scanner.
You may wish to run cookie muncher from www.blindsoftware.com to
delete cookies, you may want to delete everything in c:\windows\temp.
You may want want to run cleanmgr /sageset:99, set everything to
checked except compress old files and web publisher files, and then
run cleanmgr /sagerun:99 and waiting and rebooting.

Now if this does not work we are almost at the end of any actual
usefull support.
Open the case and check out if everything is seated in their place,
ports, boards, plugs, ram, etc.
Not sure how you would do this but clean out the inside of the system
physically, check for dust and other nasties.
Ok nothing there.
look in your bios and reset to defaults check smart status if you can
and if your system supports it.
Now if that doesn't work.
YOu can do 3 things.
1. it is a hardware problem.
you need to buy something to replace the hardware.
2. its a software problem.
Reformat the computer and reinstall everything.
3. Its an advanced problem.
Do a temperature check with various programs and you may find something wrong.
If not concider how long you have had the computer.
It may be time to replace.
Please check you do not mix versions of software, eg old new,
standard, and pro.
aditions of the same software.
Automating everything that wants to be automatic.
I think you have a load of things to diddle with.
Ifnot even a reformat works, then backtrack.
reformat and slowly reload each thing, keep a list till you find the
thing that is causing the problem, this is long and hard work but it
can work for intermittant software crashes however I don't enjoy doing it.
Luckily I have only needed to do that 3 times.
