Section 1
Introduction

About 25 years ago a company known as Atari put out one of the
first-ever game consoles for the home user. Atari's games Packman, Space
Invaders, Asteroids, etc were some of the most popular video games ever
made. In 1984 Atari released one of its most popular games Montezuma's
Revenge.
In the Atari classic you played Panama Joe, an explorer, exploring
several underground Aztec temples looking for gold, gems, and other
forms of treasure. Along the way you could find swords, whips, keys,
torches, and other tools to aid you in your quest.
Now in this sequel to the classic you are Angela Smith, and you are in
search of a legendary scroll presumed to be hidden in the ancient Aztec
temples. Legend has it that this scroll once contained a map that would
lead you to the secret hiding place of Emperor Montezuma's missing
treasure. If found the treasure would be worth billions.
However, to complete your quest you must walk, climb, and jump through
12 underground temples and 4 bonus temples. You must jump over pits of
fire and boiling lava. Climb ladders and ropes. Avoid several evil
creatures like rolling skulls, giant spiders, and deadly snakes. Along
the way gather up gems and gold as well as several tools like torches,
keys, swords, whips, and more.
Like the classic Montezuma's Revenge this version is a true
side-scroller. That means you will walk left and right, and climb up and
down. There is no forward and backward direction as such. The audio as
well as player navigation is completely 2 dimensional.

Section 4
Experience Levels

This version of Montezuma's Revenge has four basic experience levels
ranging from easy to insane. Each experience level has a different
scoring system, and controls how fast or slow the enemies are
If you choose to play on the easy level enemy monsters will move at a
moderately slow speed of 1 foot per second. However, you will not be
able to score high playing on easy. you may only gain about 10000 points
or so per level.
On insane the enemy monsters are lightning fast about 4 feet per second.
However, on insane you can rack up a high score rather quickly, and
gain several thousand points per level. To beat insane you really need
extremely good hand ear coordination to avoid the monsters.

Section 5
Movement

As stated in section 1 Montezuma's Revenge is a true side-scroller. That
means you can only move in four primary directions, left, right, up, or
down. Same is true with jumping as you can jump left, right, or up.
To walk left use the numpad 4, letter j, or left arrow key which will
move your character left in the temple. To walk right the numpad 6,
letter l, or right arrow key will move your player right in the temple.
If you are on a ladder, rope, vine or another climbable object the
numpad 8, letter i, or up arrow keys will climb up and the numpad 2,
letter k, or down arrow key will climb down.
If you are playing with a joystick, game pad, or similar game device the
stick's left, right, up, and down positions will move your character in
the same direction the stick is in.
To jump you first have to make sure your character is facing in the
proper direction. To check which direction your character is facing use
the letter f on your keyboard. Generally, the direction should be the
same direction you were walking last such as left, right, up, or down.
To change the direction of your character just use the left, right, up,
down commands for climbing and walking, and then use the numpad 0 or
space key to jump in that direction.
For joystick and game pad users button 1 is by default assigned to the
jump command. This can be reassigned in the joystick configuration
settings discussed later in this guide.

Section 6
Checking Status

As you play you will want to get an update of how many lives you have,
what keys you are carrying, how much gold and gems you found, current
score, etc. The following is a complete list of every status command on
the keyboard. For joystick users you can assign these commands to your
joystick in the joystick configuration tool that ships with the game.
The f key speaks the current direction the character is facing.
The g key announces how much gold and how many gems have been found.
The h key speaks the character's health, and how many lives are
remaining in the game.
The m key announces the closest monster to the character.
The o key will announce the closest object to the character such as gem,
sword, torch, etc.
The s key will announce your current score.
The t key will announce how many torches you have left.
The w key will announce your current location in the temple.
The y key will tell you what keys have been found, and you are still
carrying.

Section 7
Treasure and Tools

As you play you will come across healing potions, gold coins, gems,
torches, and several weapons. Some of these are laying on the ground,
but most are suspended above you in the air.
To collect gold coins simply walk over them, and as you walk your
character will gather them up.
To grab healing potions, keys, gems, swords, whips, etc use your
direction keys to face the direction of the item you want to grab. Then,
use the jump command to jump in that direction. Your character will
reach out and grab the item before she lands assuming the object was in
reach.

Section 8
Using Tools and Weapons

In Montezuma's Revenge like the classic version most tools and weapons
are used automatically as needed. If you enter a dark room a torch is
lit to light your way. If you encounter a monster your character will
use any weapon you may be carrying such as a whip, sword, ax to kill
the first available monster. If you encounter a locked door and you have
a matching color coded key the door will be unlocked automatically, and
then opened. Once an item is used however the item is then removed from
your inventory, and a new one must be located.
Other items such as a healing potion can be used at any time. A healing
potion gives your character about 25% extra health as well as heals your
character from poisons from a snake byte. To use one of your healing
potions use the p key, and the player will drink one if one is
available.
