I'll try that. I had seen examples like this but hadn't tried as they didn't appear to be quite what I was looking for - simply because I wanted the "panel" to be like the FvwmButtons Dock it is spawn from. I suppose it's a bit like the Mac OS X Documents and Downloads icons on its dock, where the items "popup" when you click on it. Your suggestion sounds good, I'll give it a go.
