The problem has been solved: It had nothing to do with the <INPUT> widget. The page being returned had a Unicode character (in one particular case, an EN DASH, E2-80-93) in the <TITLE> attribute. Why this should be a problem only under the specific conditions described above is a mystery to me. My solution is to set the title for all Firefox windows to "Firefox" with the TitleFormat style. An alternate solution would be to select a different Font style. But this does indicate something fragile within FVWM or X11. Correspondence
