I tried that today, no joy.

I think I may have issues besides the server not
running, in an strace it looks like it's communicating
with a server and after that aplay prints:

*** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to create stream.

I think I should take this to a more appropriate forum.
If the solution involves how pulseaudio is started
I'll post results.
