xcompmgr was meant as a small test/show case for compositing. When the composite
and damage features were being implemented into the Xorg server, this tool was
added as a quick way to test the new features.

It's been mostly unmaintained ever since, so you can expect lots of problems.
The kde 3.x compositor (kompmgr) is a derivative, and not much better either,
but you might want to try it instead just in case (of course that will require
that you install a fair amount of kde stuff).

If those do not suit you, I don't know of any other standalone compositor, since
most of them are built into an specific WM.
