I looked it up and it turns out there is no standard way to tell what
a user's preferred terminal emulator is. Looking at `TERM` is one way
to make an educated guess. Take a look at this answer on Stack
Exchange for example:

I notice other paths through HyperDoc take me to buttons that use the
terminal that is already open, usually with the label «Do It». So,
there is a way for HyperDoc to talk to the instance of FriCAS that is
already running. In this light, is opening a new terminal necessary?

I think this is an uncharitable description. If we never move on from
old things, we can never have new, better things. In the instances I
have been a witness of, the decision to break things was thoroughly
thought through and lead to improvement.
