My impression is that Anthropic sees OpenAI accelerating. All this talk of slowing down and regulation is just cheap talk they can deploy to discriminate themselves as the do-gooders. Thus, their performances for Bernie Sanders: They want to instigate/navigate heavy-handed federal regulation from a "progressive" populist backlash as OpenAI's inertia increases, and the open models become more competitive. They want a protected environment. The current situation seems fine to me as a user. The frontier models get distilled by open models and all the capital of the U.S. companies (vast tensor accelerators and staff) push performance forward through intense competition between OpenAI and Anthropic (Meta and Grok) and the open (U.S.) Nemotron models. If it all collapses, the open models will still be strong and there will be cheap GPUs on eBay.
