Hello Cathy, Thank you for reaching out! And Jon Witsell, too.
Yes, the news of Carl's passing has hit our FRIAM community hard. We've had many in person conversations. And here are a few postings online about Carl's passing: https://redfish.com/pipermail/friam_redfish.com/2024-September/thread.html I've been going over the archives back to 2003-2017 of Carl's posts (the post 2017 messages are on the site above but alas, not searchable): http://friam.383.s1.nabble.com/template/NamlServlet.jtp?macro=search_page&node=471366&query=tollander It's comforting for me to reread them and imagine him narrating in his voice. I worked with Carl closely at BiosGroup 2000-2002 especially on the Honda Project where we were evolving the future shapes of cars with genetic algorithms. Carl was a great mentor and friend to me. In hiring employees, you may have heard of the "Airport Test" which asks if you would be excited to be stuck in an airport with this person as flights get rescheduled. This has happened more than once for me with Carl as we traveled together and he is the metric I use of someone that was so great to pass the time with - he always had an interesting perspective, insight and story. Yes, I will be at his celebration of Life and will advertise it with his colleagues. I am CC'ing the FRIAM list here as well. Carl J Tollander July 16,1950 to August 25, 2024 On August 25, 2024, we lost our beloved Sensei, Carl Tollander following a courageous battle with cancer. A longtime Santa Fe resident, Carl became involved in taiko drumming and the local Japanese cultural community. Carl traveled to Japan to study Aikido and later to learn taiko drumming from Taiko Master Sensei on Sado and Hachijo Islands, and in Tokyo. He performed with Smokin’ Bachi locally and then formed his own group, Santa Fe Wadaiko. In 2019 he traveled with his group to the National Taiko Conference in Portland, and during the pandemic Santa Fe Wadaiko thrived through group practice online. Carl shared his enthusiasm for taiko through his teaching, performing, and drum building. He was a talented woodworker who helped students build their own drums. He will be remembered for his calm and generous nature, the many lives he touched, and his invaluable contributions to the taiko community. Carl leaves behind his partner Cathleen Higgins, his students and performance group Santa Fe Wadaiko, along with many friends in Santa Fe and in the taiko community around the world. *Celebration of life will be on September 25, 2024 at Rivera Family Funeral Home. Services are from 4pm-6pm in the Kiva Chapel. * Charitable donations in Carl’s honor can be sent to Smokin’ Bachi Taiko at 1000 Cordova Place # 327, Santa Fe, NM 87505. https://rivera.mykeeper.com/CarlTollander --- -. . ..-. .. ... .... - .-- --- ..-. .. ... .... stephen.gue...@redfish.com stephengue...@fas.harvard.edu Harvard Visualization Research and Teaching Lab <https://hwpi.harvard.edu/eps-visualization-research-laboratory/home> mobile: (505)577-5828 On Tue, Sep 10, 2024 at 6:06 PM Cathleen Higgins <owlbar...@msn.com> wrote: > Hello Steve, > > My name is Cathy Higgins.
