From the Tesla day presentation from a few months ago, I got the impression he
was in one part mad that self-driving wasn't a licked problem, and in another
part completely bewildered by their ML prowess -- he seemed almost scared of
them.

Ha! I can't help but recall L. Ron Hubbard and his relationship to the
megalomaniacal/inadequacy tendencies of JPL co-founder Jack Parsons. Rockets
aren't an object of obsession because they're vehicles to Mars or for killing
huge numbers of enemies. They're objects of obsession because they model Musk
et al's penises. Of course a celebrity like Musk tries to buy penises from
strongman dictators! I suppose it's progress to move from disposable strap-ons
to (partially) reusable strap-ons, though.

But manned aircraft seems out of character. My guess would be fully autonomous
drones. But similar to including brake pads, aircraft face more persnickety
risks than, oh let's say, adopting the Idaho stop.
