But even the placebo effect is a mechanistic medicine - one is still delivering the 'package' into the body in order to introduce a chemical change, the difference being that the mode of transport is an idea (wrapped around a ball of sugar) rather than a pill. The (somewhat tentative) explanation for why placebos work requires no supernatural effects to take place, although I suppose it does not exclude them. -Arlo James Barnes
