It might make sense to switch to freesurfer 5.3 since you have not yet
produced any surfaces yet, so switching will have no legacy costs.

Mmmh, if I may offer a guess:
> tkmedit subject1 orig.mgz
might actually work (but I doubt that, as you had shown errors about
tkmedit.bin earlier, and tkmedit calls tkmedit.bin in the end)
