I am unable to replicate this problem, but I see you are using Fedora
Core 8, which is an OS we do not have to test.  Can you try this
tksurfer:

ftp://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/transfer/outgoing/fsdev/nicks/centos4_x86_64

Copy tksurfer.bin to your $FREESURFER_HOME/bin (after renaming your
existing one to something else).  Then type chmod a+x tksurfer.bin

This has debug symbols built-in.  If a core file is generated, send it
to me via the filedrop:
