Although I proposed an end to this subject I tinkered around a bit on
this issue. Weird Things happened. Perhaps someone ist interested in my
findings. For me it was just the desire "to know", as said before, I'm
tinkering around - no serious issue.
My favorite App in Freedos is Fractint !
My configuration
Laptop Acer Travelmate 8100 series (2004 or 2005), 2GB RAM, m.2 240 GB
SATA SSD in an m.2 --> PATA adapter housing.
1. FAT-32 LBA partition of 10 GB for Freedos
2. Remaining disk space for 32-bit Linux Q4OS
Before it begins: When installing Paradox it complains not to have
enough disk space, only 6.8MB free instead of required 7.8 MB, no
surprise it can't handle this size. But pressing enter installs it
nonetheless.
I've tried various options now in different FreeDos boot options
"paradox -extk 16000" this allocates 16000k of extended memory,
which obviously is close to the upper limit
"paradox -norealheap" seems to also allocate the maximum of extended
memory
Bootoption 1,2, : report "unhandled exception 000E at 0020 1A9E ErrCode
002"
but, this is weird, repeating this command twice, evantually starts
the program :-)
Bootoption 3,4,5: without error
It seems that boot option 3 (with Expanded memory) fits best. providing
"-extk -<number*> eventually works everywhere. *maximum is above but
close to 16000. "-emk <number> works depending of the boot option

So it seems clear this is not a FreeDOS issue, but a Paradox issue.
Or both. It seems odd that they would make a product that needs some
special command line options to work, ie these were probably not
necessary on plain DOS in 1993.
paradox.exe -extk 15630 -emk 0 c:\pdox\start.sc
C:\PDOX45\PARADOX.EXE EXTK 16000
c:\pdox45\paradox -norealheap
So has anybody tried it now?
