Do these artifacts happen only with programs running in graphics mode, or do any of the artifacts happen in text mode? You described Desktop2 and card games, which makes me think you are describing graphics artifacts.
If graphics only, then I suspect that the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS doesn't fully support classic VGA modes. I know others have reported problems with a more recent graphics card (I don't recall if they were NVIDIA) not fully supporting classic VGA instructions. I did some googling, and the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS was released in 2008.
