The NEC UPD70236 is still made and sold by some Chinese company (I saw it in Alibaba at HongKong Champion International Semiconductor Limited ) In real mode, it is compatible with a 8086. It does not have a protected mode, but has a paged mode that would simplify development of an EMS manager, but make more difficult to implement XMS and HMA. BTW, another problems in making a real DOS hardware are: 1) The BIOS. If there are open source PC bioses around, they could be used, perhaps with some modifications. 2) The video.
