<https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/1.3/official/report.html> is too cryptic to tell which, if any, in the list amounts to a Norton Commander workalike. In Linux I use fcl (File Commander/Linux), which is same as fc/2 (File Commander/2) in OS/2 and the Windows version, plus mc (Midnight Commander). I've rarely used any DOS since switching from DesqView in PC DOS 7 to OS/2 in 1997 and later to Linux. My main exposure to it has been mostly for BIOS upgrades, and what I read on this mailing list.
Big exception: I'm still using OS/2 constantly to run Quattro Pro for DOS in 800x600 SVGA 132x44 text mode with ATI video card on a 1680x1050 display. If I could, I might want to dispense with OS/2. At the time, switching to OS/2 was a monumental improvement in disk I/O writing out spreadsheets in the 200k & up range. AIUI, FreeDOS disk access is vastly improved over PC DOS. The most important thing for me though is 132 column text. All my macros are build around that assumption, as 80 columns are horribly limiting. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science.
