I’m glad you got it working. :-)

When 1.3 was released there was a problem with the program that detected the
CPU level. It would identify some 486 machines as 80186. So, there were some
work-arounds in place that assumed that when anything was detected as less than
a 386, assume it is incorrect and use 368 settings. However, that test is
irrelevant in your case. The program would identify the system as QEMU and
install for that which is also 386+.

The issue of some 486 processors being identified as a 80186 has since been
fixed and recent Interim builds of the Floppy Edition do not have that issue.
And those 386 assumptions have been removed from that installer.

It is possible that the override of “8086” is being ignored when installing the
kernel. I will need to look into that.

As for “needing” FreeCOM, not really. You do need a shell to be able to do
something once the system is booted. But, it does not “need” to be FreeCOM.
There are alternative command shells available that could be used in place of
FreeCOM.

Actually you don’t need a shell at all. For example, if all your machine ever
did was run a text editor like EDIT. You could say it is your shell in the
config file. The machine would boot right into that program. However, most of
those programs were not designed with that in mind. So, when you exit the
program, the system would “crash”. You would also have problems using the “DOS
shell” menu option.

The reason I said to replace the installed command with the one that is booted
by the Floppy Edition is because there is more than one build of FreeCOM. There
are KSWAP and an XMS swap versions. XMS memory is not present on sub 286
machines and the KSWAP version works better on those.
