For those of you who might care: I released a new version of SvarCOM
today. SvarCOM is a minimalist shell for DOS, ie. a COMMAND.COM (or
FreeCOM) replacement. SvarCOM is the default shell of the SvarDOS
operating system.
The last time I announced SvarCOM on this list was in 2021. Since that
time lots of improvements have been made. Too many to list them here,
see HISTORY.TXT in the archive for details.
To keep it short: SvarCOM reached the status of being equivalent to the
Microsoft COMMAND.COM from MS-DOS 6, with two extra features: it is
multi-lingual and has a provision for "links" (shortcuts to run
applications that are neither in the current directory nor in the %PATH%).
When compared to FreeCOM, SvarCOM has a much smaller footprint on
8086-class machines (only 2K, vs 55K for FreeCOM). It is also able to
switch languages at runtime, while FreeCOM requires to use a different
binary for each language. On the other hand, FreeCOM has more exotic
features and does pretty well on 386+ machines. To each its own.
