Hi everyone! I wanted to share that I'm giving a conference talk at FOSDEM'22 in a few weeks, on February 5 at 17:00 (Brussels time).
My topic is "A Brief History of Spreadsheets" and is a look back at how spreadsheets have evolved. Have you ever wondered why spreadsheets look and act that way? Why does LibreOffice and Excel use letters for columns and numbers for rows? That's what I'm discussing in this talk. Here's my topic in the Retrocomputing devroom: https://fosdem.org/2022/schedule/event/retro_spreadsheets/ Here's a quick overview: The first 'spreadsheet' program was LANPAR, which invented the interactive concept of working with values and originated the idea of forward referencing. But the spreadsheet as you might recognize it today started with VisiCalc on the Apple II. We'll explore several favorite DOS spreadsheets as we review a history of spreadsheets, including: VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, As Easy As, Quattro Pro, .. to to understand why modern spreadsheets like LibreOffice Calc look and act that way. This topic starts as a standard presentation with slides, then changes to a live demo of spreadsheets on DOS.
