I am pretty sure this is some ugly workaround by whoever maintained OpenGEM. The location of GEM directories such as GEMAPPS and GEMSYS and so on was however somewhat hardcoded.
I kept getting CHDIR errors about GEMAPPS\GEMSYS. And these were generated from all over the batch file maze!
I had C:\OPENGEM instead of C:\. So the batch files couldn't find C:\GEMAPPS\GEMSYS. Because I had C:\OPENGEM\GEMAPPS\GEMSYS.
